How does solution focused brief therapy (SFBT) work and how can it help?
I advocate for Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) as an effective approach to facilitate positive change. By emphasizing solutions rather than problems, SFBT helps individuals envision and work towards their desired future. In my practice, which includes medication management and therapeutic conversation, this method encourages clients to leverage their strengths and resources. Utilizing telehealth, I can offer flexible access to support, allowing us to collaboratively set and achieve goals efficiently.
Hi my name is Dr. Erica Strother, I'm a doctorate prepared dual board-certified nurse practitioner in Family Health and Psychiatry. With over 20 years of healthcare experience, I am dedicated to providing compassionate, patient-centered care that promotes overall health and well-being. I strive to create a safe, nonjudgmental space where you feel heard and supported. Using a combination of evidence-based medication management and talk/supportive therapy, I tailor each treatment plan to your unique needs, working collaboratively with you to help you achieve your goals and thrive. Our collaborative, empathetic approach integrates evidence-based lifestyle modifications, talk therapy, and medication management. We cultivate a supportive setting that encourages open communication and mutual respect, empowering clients to actively engage in their healing. By tailoring treatment plans to each person’s unique needs, we promote resilience and emotional well-being through a comprehensive focus on thoughts and feelings. As a healthcare provider, I strive to create a supportive and empathetic environment where clients feel understood, comfortable, and validated. My goal is for each session to offer practical tools and insights that enhance self-awareness and emotional well-being while addressing challenges such as anxiety, depression, and the unique pressures faced by college and graduate students. Through our collaborative work, clients develop greater resilience, a clearer sense of direction, and a deeper understanding of their personal strengths and goals, leaving each session feeling heard, supported, and hopeful. How does solution focused brief therapy (SFBT) work, and what do sessions look like?
Solution-Focused Brief Therapy focuses on identifying what is already working and building on strengths, resources, and possibilities for change. Rather than spending extensive time exploring the origins of a problem, sessions focus on your goals, what you want to be different, and the small steps that can move you forward. We may explore exceptions to problems, past successes, and practical strategies that can be used between sessions.
I am an LMHC psychotherapist with almost two decades of experience. I work independently, primarily with adults and couples, while also working with children and adolescents. I am now offering couples intensives, which are one- to three-day focused psychotherapy sessions designed to give couples more time and space to work on their relationship in a shorter period of time. My approach is warm, collaborative, and practical, while also making space to understand the deeper patterns that can keep people stuck. I draw from several modalities, including CBT, psychodynamic, attachment-based, Gottman-informed, systems-based, and existential therapies. Over the years, I have found that no single approach works for everyone, so I draw from my experience across different modalities to find what is most helpful for each client or couple. My goal is to help people better understand themselves and their relationships and make meaningful changes that last.

What's your experience with solution focused brief therapy (SFBT)?
Not all therapy needs to last years, and through Solution Focused Brief Therapy, we can find solutions to your problems by building on what has worked in the past. Through my work and training with the Center for Systemic Action, I have learned how to adapt this technique to work with numerous different mental health issues. My goal will be to help you determine what changed, why your current coping strategies are not working, and how to get you back to baseline in a timely manner.
Are you or a loved one feeling stuck – uncertain about navigating changes in your life, how you see yourself, or how to reconnect with those close to you? When we feel stuck, taking steps forward can feel like a monumental task. We can work together to break down your thoughts and uncertainties, determine the best way forward, and put practical strategies into action, to empower you to create the life you want for yourself. In me, you’ll have a collaborator who will follow your lead and ensure you feel you heard but will be willing to challenge you and continue to motivate you towards achieving your goals. Therapy with me involves weaving together practical skill-building and evidence-based strategies to help you achieve your individualized goals. I work with individuals experiencing difficult life transitions at work, at home, or at school. Through individual, parent, or family sessions, we will untangle your thoughts, improve your self-esteem, and take tangible steps towards sustainable change. Neurodiversity (Autism & ADHD) affirming and LGBTQ+ friendly, I always take a person-centric approach. When you have a better understanding of who you are and what you want, your goals will feel attainable. Everyone has the ability to move past the struggles they’re experiencing, and together we can create solutions and develop skills to build long-term happiness.
