How does career counseling work and how can it help?
Whether you are trying to choose your first career, looking to change careers or simply need some accommodations to allow you to continue on your current path, career counseling is able to help in this process.   Career counseling focuses on identifying your interests, strengths and abilities.  It may involve some interest testing, review of high school/college transcripts, work history as well as other factors.  For those who may have any disabilities (mental health, cognitive or physical) it will also take in to consideration any functional impact these conditions may have to ensure that the career is a suitable fit and will not aggravate or worsen the effects of these conditions.
My name is Val Warne.  I live in Northern Michigan, am married and have 2 grown daughters.  I love the outdoors, nature and the slower pace of life this area offers. I have been a therapist for over 30 years and have worked in both the public and private sector.  I spent 10 years working with teens transitioning from high school to college, trade school or the work force and 18 years with the VA where I worked with disabled veterans transitioning back to civilian life and employment.  I also worked for several years in a private, out patient, rehabilitation facility that focused on closed head injury. I have had the opportunity to work with a wide variety of populations over the years and have developed a broad and diverse range of skill sets as a result.  I am vested and committed to helping you in your journey to healing.

Have you been worried, sad, stressed, or even facing daily challenges that seem unbearable to manage? Trying to manage our emotions can be difficult, and at times our mind and body are trying to warn us to stop and take some time to focus on ourselves, but we ignore it. I’ve experienced this myself, and still learning new ways to cope. These are common feelings that most of us experience when we are struggling to cope and regulate our thoughts and emotions due to life stressors. I understand it can be scary to take that leap in seeking help, but you’ve already accomplished the first step of browsing for resources, which is great!  Now it’s your time to shine and reclaim your power. As a therapist, I mainly utilize person-centered interventions, a collaborative approach that means you’re the expert regarding your life experiences. I will take your lead to help you realize your fullest potential by providing tools, activities, and exercises so that you can learn the triggers that may impact you, new ways to cope, and improve your overall skills. My job is to help you feel comfortable expressing yourself and provide a safe, non-judgmental space for you to be yourself and feel whole again. I’m an LLMSW who has experience working with teens, young adults, and seniors who struggled with negative thoughts, high anxiety, depression, grief, and more. But my passion is to help anyone, no matter their race, gender, religion, or sexuality, who needs someone to talk to and to listen to them. I am committed to working with you. You will not be alone in this journey because we are in this together. So if you’re ready to take that next step, contact me today, and we’ll start your healing journey!
