What's your experience with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)?
CBT happens to be my favorite modality, as it explores your thoughts and why you feel a certain way, and finds what needs to be changed, and is reworked into something healthy and meaningful. It challenges clients to think outside the box.
Hi there! My name is Dr. Ana Alicia Potthast, and I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor with extensive experience and training in behavioral health, diagnostics, addiction, co-occurring disorders, depression, anxiety, personality disorders, trauma, domestic violence, sexual abuse and assault, maternity and fertility issues, grief and loss, hoarding, family dynamics and conflict, marital issues, sexual orientation and gender identification and expression, adjustment issues, stages in life, and many other situations that bring a client to seek counseling. I provide a collaborative and open approach therapeutic style, without any judgment to each client's unique situation. I am trained in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Family Systems Therapy, Interpersonal Psychotherapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and Psychodynamic Therapy. I have a passion for assisting client's to reach their full potential and treatment goals. I obtained an Associate of Applied Science in American Sign Language from San Antonio College in San Antonio, TX, and then graduated with a Bachelor and Master of Social Work from Texas State University in San Marcos, TX, before obtaining a Doctor of Social Work from the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, California. I am an affirming ally for LGBTQIA clients, and this is a Safe Space. I am presently on the Board of Directors for Fiesta Youth, a member of PFLAG San Antonio, a Federal Club member for the Human Rights Campaign, and a former Steering Committee member for the Human Rights Campaign San Antonio. I was the first recipient of the Pride Center San Antonio Community Circle Award for my volunteer work in the community. Additionally, I work in the medical field, and I have extensive court room testimony experience regarding recommendations for contested custody situations and child welfare situations. I also have a passion for working along-side clients who are living with addiction, and the trauma and hardships they experience as they navigate towards a life of sobriety. I am a wife and mother, and I enjoy hobbies of going to concerts, volunteer work, geocaching, American Sign Language, watching documentaries, dancing, and spending time with family, friends, and my many pets.

How does cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) work and how can it help?
CBT is challenging the client by focusing on how their beliefs influence their emotions and actions. Help is providing the client with the education, tools and encouragement to practice the skills needed to reduce the symptoms they are experiencing. Clients should know it is my job to motivate, educate and assist with whatever issues they are dealing with. You will not be in counseling forever but for right now to reduce and/ or cease the symptoms you are experiencing and have the tools ready to use that are right for you when/ if the symptoms reoccur.
Lizette is a Licensed Professional Counselor and has been helping individuals, children and families for 19 years. She earned a Bachelors degree in Psychology and a Masters degree of Science in Counseling. She has clinical experience with individual and family sessions, conducting groups, and working as a Clinical Director. Her philosophy is helping teach families and children ways to enrich their abilities and help them thrive. Lizette’s first step is to help de-mystify psychological terms in order for everyone to gain a better understanding of what is going on. The work begins when skills are introduced in order to increase the use of positive emotional management. Let’s face it – change is hard, when trying to stop or start something new everything takes time, but it can be done with clinical help and support. She utilizes a variety of tools that can help in decreasing problematic symptoms to include Solution Focused Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Psychoeducation, Grounding Techniques and the list goes on. Everything will be openly communicated and tailored to your individual needs in order to make sure the treatment plan is a good fit.

One of my favorite quotes is by the poet Rupi Kaur and it says, “And here you are living despite it all”. Sometimes we get dealt difficult cards in life. Yet through all the hardships we survive. However, I believe that in life we should do more than just survive or exist, we should live and experience each day to the fullest. That is what I want to help you do.  I was born and raised in Houston and love my city with everything in me. I began my college freshman year at Hampton University, but transferred after one semester to Texas State University, where I finished my undergraduate degree. At this point you may be asking what made me spend one semester at an illustrious HBCU and then move back to Texas to attend one of the largest PWI’s in the state. It’s because I wasn’t living, I was simply existing.  During my freshman year of college, I experienced my first battle with mental health. In simpler terms, I wasn’t happy. I was severely depressed. In the same year, I was privileged enough to have parents who cared and found a therapist for me. I began to realize not everyone has parents who would go to the ends of earth for them, that therapy isn’t always affordable for everyone, and that as black people we don’t always have the best experiences with mental health professionals. After experiencing my own mental health struggles, and watching those I cared for struggle, I began to rethink my desired career in interior design. The moment I decided to join the small percentage of black therapists and be the change I wished to see was one of the best decisions I ever made. Let's begin your journey so that you can go from existing to living. You may be wondering what the CTP behind my name means. Certified Trauma Professional (CTP). This means I've undergone specialized training to understand and treat trauma in its many forms—be it emotional, physical, or psychological. I know that trauma can cast a long shadow over your life, affecting your mental health, relationships, and even your sense of self. That's why I'm committed to providing a safe and nurturing space where you can explore your experiences and feelings without judgment. I've faced my own challenges that have shaped me both personally and professionally. I understand that the journey through healing is deeply personal, and can be complex. My role is to walk beside you on this path, while offering specialized knowledge and tools to help you navigate your journey towards healing. I am here to support you in moving from merely surviving to truly thriving. If you're ready to take that brave step toward healing, I'm here to guide and support you through your transformative journey. Let's work together to unlock the barriers that have been holding you back, so you can live your life to the fullest. Let's begin your journey today. I work with individuals of all backgrounds including individuals from the BIPOC and LBGTQIA+ community who are dealing with life transitions, trauma, relationship problems, anxiety, and depression. I am experienced in cognitive and dialectical behavioral therapy. However, I work from a person-centered eclectic perspective. This means first and foremost I want to get to know you and what brings you to therapy, then together we can build the proper form of treatment for you.  Starting therapy can be a scary thing. I am a stranger to you right now and opening up about life’s hardest battles to a stranger can be daunting. Researching therapists is already a huge step, be proud of that! If you find yourself ready to take the next step, I hope to become more than a stranger and support you through your healing journey. Take the next step, let's unleash your strengths today.
