Why did you become a therapist, and what motivates you to continue?
My desire to assist people in overcoming obstacles in life is what led me to pursue a career as a therapist. Observing the life-changing potential of therapy motivated me to seek a profession in which I could support people's development and well-being. The significant improvements I witness in my clients are what spur me on to keep practicing as a therapist. I am committed to this work because I get to be a part of their journey, see firsthand how resilient they are, and help them through challenges. Any improvement, no matter how tiny, strengthens my commitment to assisting others in leading more satisfying lives and my belief in the therapeutic process.
I have accumulated over 33 years of experience in the healthcare field, starting in medical records and later transitioning into the insurance sector. Subsequently, I assumed the role of Violence Prevention Coordinator/Facilitator, where I educated healthcare professionals on assisting individuals facing sexual or physical assault. During this time, I also led the Ramsey County Sexual Assault Protocol Team, bringing together a multidisciplinary group in the Saint Paul area to create victim-sensitive protocols for survivors of sexual assault. Concurrently, I pursued and completed a master's degree in Counseling and Psychological Services. Opting for a different path than a PsyD, I entered the field of Nursing. For 14 years, I dedicated my efforts to working with individuals dealing with eating disorders, finding immense fulfillment in this area. In May 2022, I accomplished my PMHNP from the University of North Dakota and subsequently worked at a psychiatric clinic in the Fargo Moorhead area for about a year before deciding to establish my private practice. In my current practice, I collaborate with clients using a holistic and person-centered approach to help them achieve their treatment goals. I possess a sincere compassion for individuals across the lifespan grappling with mental illness. I strongly believe that both physical and mental health are integral components of optimal well-being. Within my therapeutic approach, I prioritize integrating clients' beliefs, traditions, and values into the treatment plan, acknowledging the profound significance of these elements in the therapeutic process. *Specialties •Mental Health •Psychiatry •Psychotherapy •Child Psychiatry •Preventive Medicine •Medication Management •Evaluations •Assessments •Treatment planning •Adolescents •Adults •Geriatric *Conditions treated •Depression •Anxiety •Bipolar disorders •PTSD •ADHD •Eating disorders •Relationship issues •Mood disorders •Substance abuse •Personality disorders •Anxiety disorders •Trauma and PTSD •Pediatric Psychiatry •Counseling •Autism •Behavioral issues •Emotional trauma •Anger Management •Grief and Loss •Lifestyle counseling •Weight management •Sleep problems •Insomnia •Schizophrenia •Addiction •Panic attacks •Geriatric Psychiatry •Substance use disorder •Personality disorder •Preventive care education *Treatment philosophy Nicole works collaboratively with her clients using a holistic and person-centered approach to meet their treatment goals. Why did you become a therapist, and what motivates you to continue?
My journey to where I am now has been an unexpected but pleasant surprise! I originally had my mind set on a long-term career as a professor at a university conducting research on diagnosis and assessment and seeing clients part-time. During my time as a faculty member, I found myself drawn to the helping side of being a teacher and advisor rather than the administrative and research side of my responsibilities. The universities strong focus on administrative duties and publishing research articles became mundane and unfulfilling. I quickly learned that it was not working in an academic setting that I loved, but it was what all my positions had in common: working directly with clients and individuals to foster hope, see positive growth and change, and feel happy, capable, and whole again. That’s when I discovered that being a full-time therapist was my true passion.
Is managing stress, anxiety, or trauma overwhelming and impacting your quality of life? Do you feel physically and emotionally drained and unable to manage daily tasks? You deserve to feel happy, capable, and whole again! I can help you identify your inner strengths to overcome any emotional and mental health challenges you are experiencing. I have over 12 years of experience providing services to clients with various mental health challenges. I have found that my style and approach are a good fit for a range of individuals. This includes those in late adolescence and adulthood who may be dealing with anxiety, mood, and trauma-related disorders/symptoms as well as individuals facing life stressors and transitions. I work to help my clients navigate these difficulties, identify unique needs, and build skills to unlock their inner and inherent capacity for healing and growth. My approach to therapy varies based on the individual needs of each client I work with. I believe in utilizing a client-centered approach and research-backed treatments that are most effective for your struggles. This approach helps me and the client build a shared understanding of their reality and allows us to work together to chart a path forward.
