For people that are hesitant to try therapy, what do you wish you could tell them?

For those of you who feel nervous about starting therapy for the first time or maybe in a long time. I want you to know that's completely normal, it's how most of us feel when we are starting therapy. Your therapist that you choose has likely gone to therapy and like I do and there's always that beginning period of just wondering like is this going to be the right fit, and then when I call this person up. Is it gonna feel like we're connecting, like oh comfortable talking to this person about really difficult things. And it's okay if you find that you don't feel that way when you make contact with someone for the first time, or you have that first session. The best way I can encourage you is just to take a little leap. Right. If you start something and then feel like this isn't going to be quite right, I think I need to try again. Whoever you have met with whatever therapists you choose to start with, they will understand they're used to that they get it. Truly. So I think just, just be willing to start and see if you can grow and develop that relationship that connection with that particular therapist, and just know that they're used to hearing all kinds of things I know that I'm used to hearing all kinds of emotions and thoughts and about different kinds of experiences. So there really isn't any shame. You can feel a complete freedom to go into that space and know that it is your space is what you're paying for. That's what you're investing in, and you know just finding a space where you feel like it's not only the right fit, but that you feel supported and validated, is exactly what you deserve to find, so keep on searching until you find the right one, and I can't wait for you to get started, I know that my clients who either haven't been in therapy for a while or never been in therapy before I have a lot of clients who have never been in therapy before, and they wish they had started sooner. So I think. I also want to encourage you that they wish they had started sooner because they're like, oh, okay, this is what it's like. This is what I can get from it so best of luck.

For people that are hesitant to try therapy, what do you wish you could tell them?
When I first started therapy in my early twenties, I thought it would just be the therapist telling me what to do and how to live the best way. I thought I'd have to do homework worksheets like I was taking a class and that I'd suddenly be this perfect kind of person who didn't have anxiety or relationship difficulties anymore. Unfortunately, it wasn't that easy, but fortunately, therapy is so much more than just another series of To-Dos for your already overwhelmed life. You can grow, heal trauma, and find ways to move forward. According to research about what makes therapy effective, the relationship between therapist and client is key. This means basically that you should like your therapist, want to talk to them, and feel like they like you! For people who have faced a lot of rejection, a relationship like therapy can be kind of scary, but I always remind my clients that therapy is a place where you are ultimately in charge. You choose what we work on, how fast, and how we go about it. My job is to help you see a little beyond your capacity, to support the stories in your life you want more of, help you puzzle through stuck spots, and to notice and point out your progress. We do not have to talk about your childhood if you don't want to or don't find that helpful! Therapy is about your goals, and I'm here to help you identify them and find ways to move towards them.
Hi, I’m Emily! I help smart, sensitive people rewrite harmful stories from the past, tame anxiety, and live with more peace and confidence. I specialize in supporting Exvangelicals, religious trauma survivors, and people in faith transition or deconstruction. I’m trained in EMDR therapy to help you heal and reduce trauma responses so you can embody your values, not your past.

If you're even considering whether therapy might be a good option for you, take the plunge! It's totally normal to feel anxious or nervous about trying something new, and therapy is no different. There's a lot of vulnerability that comes with entering therapy. I urge you to consider... what's the worst that could happen? You feel the same as you do now? You know what that feels like, and it sounds like you're ready to experience something different. There's no threshold for the worthiness of therapy.
Welcome! You've taken a great step by exploring new ways to care for yourself through therapy. Many situations and life circumstances bring people to this space, and I look forward to talking with you more about your story. If you're even wondering if therapy might be right for you, then the answer is yes! Over the years, I've developed a passion for working with young adults and supporting the unique challenges they face today. I've found that many young (and even not-so-young!) adults are dealing with major life transitions, and struggle to navigate those new changes at times. This is where therapy steps in! As a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor in Illinois, I offer teletherapy services that allow you to experience therapy from the comfort of your home. When working with me, you can expect to gain new coping skills, tools for challenging and disrupting negative thoughts, new insights, and increased awareness of strategies for self-care and self-love. This process can be difficult at times, but I believe growth and change do not exist without some discomfort. You have taken the steps to begin (or maybe continue) your mental health journey and I look forward to the opportunity to support and empower you along the way! I hope to talk with you soon.

I always tell people who are hesitant about trying therapy that it is just a conversation. Therapy is your time, we can work on whatever you would like to work. If some topics feel too difficult, we can save them until you are ready to work on them.
Do you feel like something is off, but can’t put your finger on it? Do you feel like you could be performing better, but don’t know what is standing in your way? Is something going on with your child and you want to help them excel? Do you want to gain a better overall understanding of yourself and how your brain processes information? You can learn the answers to these questions and more with a highly customized psychological assessment. During the free consultation, you will have an opportunity to discuss your concerns with Dr. Kaylor, so she can prepare customized tests to target your specific questions: calendly.com/drleahkaylor Dr. Kaylor specializes in the assessment and diagnosis of learning, memory, and attention issues in children and adults. Take the leap. I've experienced that feeling of hesitancy when asking a stranger to walk alongside me on my journey of self-discovery and healing. You may experience feelings of doubt - doubt about yourself and the therapeutic process; however, you don't have to feel hopeful about the future, it's enough to just be curious about what is coming.
If you have been traumatized in the past, by a relationship, an incident, an accident, something that seems unforgivable and unmanageable to you, even now, I can help. If you find yourself experiencing emotional pain, hopelessness and loss of connectedness, I can help. I can help by helping you to begin to treasure yourself, first for surviving, and eventually for learning to flourish, through good times and bad. I can help by providing you a safe and supportive space to let your mind wonder and find answers to your inner most questions about yourself and your experiences, whether past or present. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor and Certified Clinical Trauma Professional. I am also certified in Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy. My areas of clinical expertise include addiction, mental health court, personality disorders, crisis and trauma, and psychotic disorders. If you are interested in making the investment in yourself to begin counseling, I offer a free 30-minute initial session. This initial session will provide you with the opportunity to have your questions answered about the therapy process and get a feel for how I am as a therapist. I am also available by email to answer any questions.
