For people that are hesitant to try therapy, what do you wish you could tell them?

It's normal to be nervous about trying something new. How could someone not be nervous about talking to a stranger and telling them your whole life story? I wish I could tell people to give it an honest shot. Find a therapist you feel comfortable with, which may take many tries. Spend time with each therapist you try, at least 3-4 sessions to assess your comfort level. Yes, this is definitely a lot of work. However, the work that therapy entails allows you to change your life.

Here’s my self-disclosure: I’ve been there. Burnout...complete, utter, total exhaustion. Absolutely nothing left to give while constantly being overextended. You have a to-do list that's a mile long, your kid is demanding their 12th snack, and you haven’t quite finished that work project your boss is expecting. The pressure is unrelenting and you are completely overwhelmed. These are the perfect conditions to prompt burnout. You’re depleted, irritable, and feeling inadequate. There is no limit to what you would do to make your kids happy, let's return the favor for yourself.

Therapy is a process focused on helping you understand different pieces of yourself. The sooner you give yourself permission to invest in and understand yourself, the sooner you create room for life to be different.

I use an emotion focused approach and have received training in Dr. Sue Johnson's Emotionally Focused Therapy. Additionally, I have training in Play Therapy, sandtray, and art therapies. I utilize a creative, experiential approach to encourage clients to explore their thoughts, emotions, and relationships.

Therapy does not mean that something is wrong with you, therapy serves to help clients find clarity in areas of your life, it's to help you work through complex emotions and traumatic experiences. In you therapy you will learn to challenge negative thinking and develop new techniques to cope with difficult situations. It's also a space to focus on personal growth.

Shonta Williams received her MSW from the University of Georgia. She is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, with over 18 years of experience working with adolescents, individuals, couples and families on issues of anxiety, anger management, depression, self-esteem, and life transitions such as divorce, parenting, co-parenting, and grief. I work to create a safe and non-judgmental space for clients to process their thoughts and emotions and create healthy coping skills and healthy connections with others. My therapeutic approach is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Mindfulness-Based(MBCT), Motivational Interviewing, and Solution Focused Brief (SFBT). During my time working with those struggling with substance use disorder, I recognized that trauma was at the root of substance use, and traditional talk therapy didn't always work. Implementing EMDR and Brainspotting into my learning and practice has had such a positive impact with clients.

I will take therapy at your pace and follow your lead. I tell all of my clients, “you have the gas pedal and you have the brake.” For my perfectionists out there, and remember, there is no right or wrong way to “do” therapy. Showing up, consistently, for yourself and growing reflection can be so impactful. I am here to guide you along the process.
