Why did you become a therapist, and what motivates you to continue?
I was told my whole life that I needed to be a therapist. I loved listening to my friends and offering genuine advice for as long as I can remember, but my life took me a different direction. I was on track to becoming a Physical Therapist when I suffered a tragic and sudden loss. After that, the only life I thought I could live meaningfully was as a therapist. I truly love what I do.
I enjoy working with clients who are seeking guidance in creating new opportunities, whether you are excited or terrified by change. I help clients learn to regulate uncomfortable or overwhelming emotions that continue to affect your relationships with others, or to develop and/or maintain interpersonal relationships, as well as those experiencing depression and looking to healthily cope with their symptoms. As a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, I am ready to help you navigate your journey in self-discovery or work with couples in need of someone who can identify with them. I am also a Marine Corps Veteran. My approach is client-centered; together we decide on your goals.. You are the expert of your life and experiences; I am here to offer guidance, tools, and therapeutic techniques. I have years of experience using CBT and DBT as therapeutic modalities, as well as Motivational Enhancement Therapy to help identify what drives my clients to seek changes. Vulnerability is strength. Seeking answers through curiosity is half the battle. With my experience and your self-knowledge, we can identify problem areas, behaviors, symptoms, and emotions that could be affecting your holistic wellness. You’re in the right place; I will always work to ensure your needs are being met.

Why did you become a therapist, and what motivates you to continue?
From a young age I have always been curious about people. I remember going on long car trips and looking out the window wondering what were the life stories of the people I would see passing by me. As I grew older, that curiosity grew into a desire to help people who were struggling. In high school, I began volunteering and learning about how people can heal through human connection. I went on to the University of California, Santa Cruz, to study Psychology and Sociology to dive deeper into how our biological and environmental circumstances can impact our mental health. After college, I worked in the social services field and realized that I wanted to be on the other side of the helping field. I wanted to be in the room with people and bear witness to their stories. I went on to receive my Masters in Counseling with an emphasis in Marriage and Family Therapy from California State University, Long Beach. I have since gained therapeutic experience working in elementary schools, addiction treatment centers, crisis centers, and private practice settings. I have worked with a plethora of mental health issues and concerns.
Hi, I am Kirsten. I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. I have always been fascinated by the human experience. My therapeutic style looks at how the past influences our present day functioning. How did you function and what did you believe about yourself before the world told you any different? By becoming emotionally aware and cognizant of our current beliefs, we can begin to heal our past wounds and become whole. I aim to provide a safe, non-judgmental, individualized, transformative experience for each person.

Why did you become a therapist, and what motivates you to continue?
I understand that life can be so messy. Oftentimes, we need a nonjudgmental place to share that mess. Therapy is a place where you can share, learn, and grow from the things in your life. Throughout my life, therapy has always been important. Being a counselor provides me with so much fulfillment, especially watching you grow and accomplish your goals.
I believe the therapy process is a marathon, not a sprint. Pacing and patience are key to the type of collaborative therapy I offer. In this “marathon”, I am open to discussing what tactics you want to use to create the change you want to see. As a counselor, I use myself as a vehicle for change in the therapeutic process. I bring a warm, personable, and laid-back nature to each session because I believe everyone needs a comfortable space to share their story. I push my clients in the direction of their goals, but I respect the importance of pacing and patience during the therapy “marathon”. I utilize an eclectic approach to meet you where you are. Some of these approaches include Adlerian, Person-Centered, Cognitive Behavioral and Mindfulness therapies. I have experience working with student-athletes and I know how difficult it is juggling academics, work, school, sports, and a personal life. I also enjoy working on self-esteem building. I invite not only student-athletes, but any adolescents and adults who are struggling with life's pressures. If you are looking for someone who will take the role of pushing you to meet your goals while still staying in your corner cheering you on, please feel free to reach out.
