What do therapy sessions with you look like?
During therapy sessions, I typically create a safe and welcoming environment in which you can openly discuss your thoughts, feelings, and concerns. We'll work together to identify your objectives and create a personalized treatment plan that is tailored to your specific needs. Sessions may include talk therapy, coping strategy exploration, skill-building exercises, and progress reflection. My goal is to offer you compassionate support, guidance, and tools to help you overcome life's obstacles and improve your overall well-being.

What does a typical session with you tend to look like?
We will spend some time getting to know each other at the initial session. I will ask questions to help me understand your life situation, mental health concerns and therapy goals. We will make a plan of what treatment goals you would like to focus on first and what steps we will take to accomplish them.
I'm a clinical social worker with 10 years of experience. I have a upbeat, creative, warm and non-judgmental personality which clients report make it easy and natural to open up to me. I believe that therapy is an avenue to self improvement, healing and transformation. I see myself as a guide who supports clients in their journey of personal and emotional growth. I help clients become more self-aware, improve self regulation and coping skills, heal from previous stressful/traumatic experiences, enhance their communication skills, and understand their emotions at a deeper level. I see clients across the lifespan and provide counseling to children, adolescents and adults. I use traditional counseling techniques such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), motivational interviewing and solution-focused therapy, as well as complementary therapy approaches such as mindfulness and meditation to help clients work towards greater happiness. Please reach out to me via email, phone call or text if you are interested in becoming a new client. I respond to texts and e-mails within 24 hours. Once we connect, I will set up the 15 minute phone consultation to discuss my availability, answer questions, and help you determine if working with me is a good fit for you and your goals.

We tailor our therapy sessions to your specific needs and goals. We begin by discussing your goals, and then work together to address your challenges using techniques such as compassionate communication and mindfulness. Hello! I'm Dr. Kara Kornher, a passionate psychologist with over 25 years of experience in clinical psychology. My journey has led me to specialize in helping individuals and couples enhance their communication and relationships. I believe that by changing unhelpful thoughts and beliefs, and learning effective communication skills, we can foster healthier connections. Since December 2022, I've been working remotely, collaborating with clients who have private insurance or Medicare. My approach is centered on Compassionate Communication—a model designed to improve understanding and problem-solving within relationships. Previously, I served as a Psychologist and Learning Disabilities Specialist at California State University San Marcos until December 2023. There, I supported students with disabilities by providing necessary accommodations, assessments, and guidance to help them succeed academically. I hold a Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) degree from an APA accredited program and completed my internship at an APA accredited site. My expertise extends to working with college students dealing with mental health challenges, ADHD, and ASD. If you're looking for support to navigate relationship challenges or improve your communication skills, I'm here to help you take those steps towards a more fulfilling life.
